Good Giving Gone Bad

If we were to tell you U.S. citizens gave $24 billion in charitable donations last year, would you be impressed? Well buckle those giving belts, because $24 billion is simply the amount OVER what we gave in 2010. The total giving for 2011 was more than $322 billion!* Yep, as a whole, we’re a pretty giving bunch. And while many assume that corporations and foundations contribute the lion’s share of charitable donations, the truth is, 80 percent of philanthropic checks are signed by individuals, not corporate accountants.

Charitable giving not only helps those less fortunate, it has the nice side effect of making us feel warm and fuzzy inside. It’s nice to know we’re helping others. Unfortunately, whenever you have money involved, no matter the cause, there’s bound to be those who take advantage of the giving spirit. That’s why you should be diligent when considering a donation to charity. Here’s a list of things to check on (courtesy of the Federal Trade Commission) before writing that check.

  • When natural disasters strike, too often you’ll find those looking to make a quick buck from those who are willing to give to help out. Be wary of any organizations that rise from the ruins, claiming to offer aid with your help (and money).

  • Always ask for written information about the charity. Look for things like name, address, telephone number and website. A charity that’s legit will be more than willing to provide you with any of that information, plus their mission, facts on how your money will be used, and proof that your contribution is tax deductible.

  • Check with the office that regulates charitable organizations in your state to verify a charity’s authenticity. Missouri has such an office with a website, as does Illinois. Other states are available as well.

  • Some organizations use names that closely resemble that of more well-known, respected organizations. If you detect a slight difference, contact the original charity to check out its authenticity.

  • Sometimes a gut feeling is your best defense. If something just doesn’t feel right, trust that feeling. Do your homework. Give the charity in question a good checking over.

  • Never fall for high-pressure tactics. A legitimate charity generally will not push you to donate on the spot. This includes any organization that offers to send a courier or overnight delivery service to collect your donation.

  • Never send cash! It can be lost or stolen. For both security and tax purposes, always pay by check. Be sure it’s made payable to the charity and not the solicitor.

Don’t forget, Vantage has its own charitable giving opportunities throughout the year. Right now we have our Tools for Learning program going on, where you can help less fortunate children by donating back-to-school supplies. Donations of new school supplies can be dropped off at any Vantage branch now through August 31. All supplies go to Kid Smart and the Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition.

The holidays will be here before you know it, and our Holiday Giving program will once again team up with Cardinal Care for charitable giving. You’ll find other opportunities for local giving as well.

We thank you for being so generous with your giving, and we ask that you please remember to use diligence when researching a charity. It’s sad, but there are those out there who are always on the prowl for unsuspecting generosity.
